Opinion: What Would Happen If Nnamdi Kanu Becomes President In 2023?

Nnamdi Okwu Kanu is a British Nigerian Biafra political activist. He is the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), with the former aim to create an independent state for the people of old Eastern Region of Nigeria through referendum. Kanu, who is also the director of a United Kingdom’s registered radio station named Radio Biafra, was arrested on treason charges on 14 October 2015, in Lagos Nigeria, and was detained for more than a year, despite various court orders that ruled for his release. During his hearings and charges in court, Nnamdi Kanu appeared regularly wearing a Jewish prayer shawl and head covering.

Kanu who was later released on 28 April, 2017 has seemingly been controversial in all his dealings, among which he posited to be a believer in Judaism, which he often leads his followers to his religious rites, according to the doctrines of Jews.

Nnamdi Kanu, who was born in Isiama Afara Ukwu, Umuahia, Abia State, perceived state of the Republic of Biafra, is a citizen of Nigeria with all the fundamental human rights of the country. His controversial lifestyle is an agitation for recognition and incorporation of the Eastern Nigeria, on the political organogram of Nigeria. According to the concepts of Biafra, the following states: Enugu State , Rivers State, Cross River State, Abia State, Imo State, Akwa Ibom Sate, Ebonyi, Bayelsa State and Anambra State, were to be freed by Referendum, as an independent state.

For his controversy and wants of Independence, Kanu had been arrested and detained on several occasions. On 19 October 2015, it was reported that Nnamdi Kanu had been granted bail. after a secret arraignment at Magistrate Court, Wuse 11. However, the bail seemed “controversial” which was also speculated that the DSS announced the bail only “to calm the angry people of Biafra”. On 23 November 2015, Nnamdi Kanu was arraigned in an Abuja Magistrate Court for the first time, for charges of “criminal conspiracy, intimidation and membership of an illegal organisation” by Nigeria’s Department of State Services (DSS). Accordingly, the charges violated “Section 97, 97B and 397” of Nigeria ‘s penal code.

Nnamdi Kanu, because of his continuous yearning for freedom and perhaps, continuous search for a reformed Nigeria, seemingly do so because of neglect, tribal disintegration and political stigmatisation of Easten Nigeria, mostly, as a comeuppance to the former political-tribal incitement of cessation that happened during the reign of Ojukwu and Aguyisi Ironsi. The unsuccessful cessation, which which perhaps led to the misinterpretation of the Nigerian currency -naira- as never allow Igbo rule again, has seemingly made benchmark that stopped the Eastern Nigeria from getting elected into the Nigerian Presidency.

In submission, Nnamdi Kanu’s position is seemingly an end to secure a voice to the neglected Igbos. Meanwhile, there should be fair play in the political setting of Nigeria. Since it is officially recognised that Nigeria has three Major ethnic groups, and six geopolitical zones, political power should be allowed to circulate among all these categories, without fear of cessation.

Giving justice and preference too, Nnamdi Kanu should be elected the president of Nigeria, to stop the bitterness, neglect, and the wound caused by racial, tribal, political stigmatisation.

God bless Nigeria.
